What has changed over the years and above all what has changed for aftermarket exhausts?

These are the approvals and the abbreviations to recognize them from the registration certificate:

Marketed until 17/06/03, with a tolerance of a further 12 months for the disposal of end-of-series stocks. In fact, by the end of 2000 they were already practically all out of business. No specific wording on the registration certificate;

In force since 17/06/99 as a homologation standard, the Euro 1 vehicles have been marketed until 01/07/04; also in this case with a one-year grace period for the disposal of end-of-series stocks. On the registration certificate they show the words “97/24 chap. 5 phase I”, in the case of mopeds, and “97/24 Chap. 5 and Chap.9” in the case of motorcycles;

In force from 01/04/03, they were marketed until 31/12/07, with a further 12 month tolerance for those models built in no more than 5000 pieces. On the registration certificate the wording is “2002/51 / EC Phase A” or “2003/77 Phase A” or ”97 / 24 / EC Chap.5 and Chap.9′ ‘;

For motorcycles this is the most advanced protocol. It is effective from 01/01/06. On the registration certificate the wording is “Complies with Directive 2003/77 / EC Ref. 2002/51 / EC Phase B and 97/24 / EC Chap.9”. Or by the alternative wording “2006/120 / EC”.

From 01/01/16 the Euro 4 came into force (first for motorcycles, then for mopeds). The code shown on the registration certificate that identifies the Euro 4 of motorcycles and mopeds is E4 168/2013. The corresponding regulation 168/2013, on the other hand, is reported under item V.9 of the vehicle registration document.

From 01/01/2020 the Euro5 came into force. The code shown on the registration certificate that identifies the Euro 5 is 134/2014 / EU. The corresponding legislation (134/2014 / EU, and subsequent update 2018/295) is instead reported under item V.9 of the vehicle registration document.

As can be seen, there have been periods of overlap in the sales of vehicles of different categories. In fact, the law established mandatory dates for new homologations, leaving time for the stock of vehicles homologated according to the previous protocols to run out.

We come to us: the EXHAUSTS or SILENCERS.

For each category, the legislation prescribes noise and pollution limits that the original exhaust system and the aftermarket one must comply with in order to be able to receive approval.

Leaving aside the long gone EURO2, EURO1 and EURO0, let’s focus on the not too old EURO3 and the more recent EURO4 and EURO5 (the actual requirement).

The EURO3 regulations concerning aftermarket exhaust systems are: Directive 2006/120 / EC, Directive 2005/30 EC and 97/24 EC, for older systems.
The silencer must clearly bear the manufacturer’s mark, the approval number referring to that product and that manufacturer, the country of approval, and the number 9 must also be indicated if it complies with the noise approval and the number 5 if it complies with the approval. pollution, both numbers if both are respected. (Paragraph, Annex VII, 97/24 / EC)


  • DUC1002 e3 0137 5: DUH1002 type silencer with homologation number 0137 for pollution (5) issued by the Italian ministry of transport (e3).
  • DUC1002 e24 10008 9: silencer type DUH1002 with approval number 10008 for noise (9) issued by the Irish ministry of transport (e24)
  • DUC1002 e1 12128 5 9: silencer type DUH1002 with approval number 12128 for pollution (5) and noise (9) issued by the German ministry of transport (e1)

While the EURO4 regulation is 168/2013 with subsequent updates 134/2014 and 2018/295 (up to EURO5). The silencer must bear the product code, the country of approval, the approval number and the coding letter: H anti-pollution exhaust and noise reduction device, G noise reduction device, F anti-pollution device. (Table 1, Annex VII, 901/2014)


  • BN1400 e4 1052 H: Type BN1400 Exhaust (Anti-Pollution and Noise Reduction Device H) Approval issued by the Dutch Ministry of Transport (e4) under number 1052
  • MG500 e12 0036 G: approval for noise reduction device G type MG500 issued by the Austrian Ministry of Transport (e12) with number 0036
  • TH205 e21 0154 F: approval for type TH205 anti-pollution device F issued by the Portuguese Ministry of Transport with number 0154

How do you know if the homologation found on the exhaust is correct for our EURO4 or Euro5 bike?

The exhaust system of a EURO4 or EURO5 motorcycle is equipped with a catalyst, it can be contained in the header pipes, in the central compensator/crossover (if present) or in the final silencer.

  • In the event that it is contained in the header pipes or in the central compensator/crossover, the final silencer will have the sole function of reducing the noise for which the approval code will end with the letter G. (Example: Moto Guzzi V85TT). The anti-pollution function is to be attributed to the original catalyst present in the system or to any anti-pollution device F.
  • In the event that it is contained in the final silencer, the related aftermarket replacement must also have it and the approval code engraved on the silencer will bear the letter H (anti-pollution and noise reduction device) or alternatively the final silencer must be approved as a safety device. noise reduction Gwith an integrated anti-pollution device F. (Example: Moto Guzzi V7 III).
  • The letter F, on the other hand, refers to anti-pollution devices, it is normally used for catalyzed fittings, catalyzed manifolds or catalyzed central compensators, of course, for the homologation of the noise there will be a combined noise reduction device G or the original silencer.


If your motorcycle is EURO4, the replacement silencer must also be EURO4, exhausts approved according to the EURO3 standard (with numbers 5 and 9) do not comply with the current legislation.

Approval process in brief:

  • The manufacturing company develops the prototypes and defines the technical drawings of the product
  • The certifying body (Ministry of Transport), through an internal engineer or authorized intermediary (private body), carries out an accreditation visit to the manufacturer. The visit, for inspection purposes, has the purpose of verifying the production processes and standards followed by the manufacturer, who must guarantee the conformity of the production of the devices. This visit is repeated every 2 years.
  • The engineer, or intermediary body, performs the tests required by the relevant legislation on the product, if positive the process continues, if not, the appropriate changes are made and the tests are repeated.
  • Drawings and technical reports of the tests are sent to the relevant Ministry and within about 4/6 weeks the product is approved, the manufacturer receives the green light for production with the relative approval code and certificate to be attached to the product.

Approved product

An approved product (specific and correct for your motorcycle) turns out to be an approved device for replacing the original component, for which no transcriptions are needed in the motorcycle booklet, it is perfectly in compliance with the highway code, revisions can be carried out ordinary and any other type of control.
