On the Road with Mistral: preparing for the trip to North Cape

Practical tips for tackling the motorcycle trip from Mandello to North Cape

There is a point on the map, beyond the Arctic Circle, that holds an almost indescribable allure. Perhaps it’s the fascination of reaching the edge of the known world, or maybe it’s simply the idea of getting there by motorcycle, after thousands of kilometers crossing Europe from its heart to its northernmost border. For Romano and Antonella, North Cape was not just a destination. It was a dream, one of those born from travel stories, photographs and long evenings spent staring at the bike and imagining the road ahead.

When they decided to set off with a group of friends, all riding a V85, the preparation took over every thought for weeks. There was no room for improvisation: a journey like this demands awareness. And for those who travel on two wheels, being aware means taking care of every detail before setting off.

The motorcycle: preparation and reliability above all
Romano and Antonella set off riding their Moto Guzzi V85 TT Euro 5+, a choice that combines character, reliability, and the right balance between performance and comfort. Equipped with the complete Mistral kit, from the exhaust to the screen protector, and enhanced with a series of improvements designed specifically for long-distance travel, the bike was prepared with meticulous care.
Every component was checked: from the oil change to the inspection of brake and coolant fluids, and the tire condition. The tires received particular attention, pressure, tread depth, and integrity, all crucial for safely tackling every kind of road surface, from the warm roads of central Europe to the cold, damp climate of the north. The battery, brakes, and transmission all had to be in perfect condition. The chain was cleaned, lubricated, and precisely tensioned.
In the top case, an emergency tool kit found its place next to the GPS. Because the motorcycle, even before departure, must already be ready to arrive.

Dressing for every sky
Leaving Mandello del Lario and reaching North Cape means crossing a symphony of climates. From the mildness of the lake to the Norwegian mists, each stage has its own sky, its own wind, its own rain. Antonella carefully chose every layer: the waterproof jacket, technical pants, thermal clothing for the cold mornings beyond the Arctic Circle.
Gloves were one of the most thoughtful purchases: not only waterproof but also protective, comfortable, and reliable. Tall, sturdy boots ready for hours and hours of riding. The helmet, with an anti-fog visor and good ventilation, made a difference on damp days when the road seemed to blend with the sky.
They didn’t forget the protective gear: back protectors, knee pads, elbow pads. Because the journey is freedom, yes, but also responsibility towards oneself.

Stages and rhythms
A trip to North Cape isn’t measured just in kilometers, but in stops, in hunting for fuel in the most isolated stretches, in breaks to stretch your legs and clear your mind. Romano and Antonella planned each day carefully: no more than three hours between pauses, with flexible stops, because the beauty of the journey is also in allowing yourself to be surprised.
In some areas, finding a gas station isn’t guaranteed. They quickly learned not to underestimate the fuel reserve needle. And they also learned not to rush: time flows differently on two wheels.

The details that make the difference
Some think it’s enough to hop on the bike and go. But those who have truly experienced the road know that sometimes a small detail makes everything easier. A thermal flask with coffee still warm after hours of rain. A seat cushion that saves your back after a hundred kilometers against the wind. An intercom to share impressions and silence.
Small precautions, carefully chosen, made a difference day after day. Nothing superfluous, only what could truly help make the journey smoother, safer, and more enjoyable, even on the longest and most demanding stretches.

The adventure begins before you set off
Every kilometer toward North Cape taught something: that preparation is a form of love for the journey, that cold can be faced but fatigue must be listened to, and that even the last curve can offer a breathtaking view.
Romano and Antonella returned with tired hands, full eyes, and a light heart. But they know well that the real departure happened long before the first traffic light. It began when they decided to prepare, with care, respect, and enthusiasm.
